Robert Morris University to Host the 2022 National Robotics League National Championship
Competition Opens Doors for Students to Manufacturing Careers
The 2022 National Robotics League (NRL) National Championship will bring high-impact battles between high-tech robots to the UPMC Events Center on the campus of Robert Morris University this weekend, May 20-21, 2022. This full-contact innovation competition will bring together the most qualified middle and high school robotics teams, all vying to for the title of “best in the country.”
The NRL was created by the National Tooling and Machining Association (NTMA) as a fast-paced and fun way to expose young people to possibilities in manufacturing careers and give them opportunities to develop the skills they will need for success in the industry.
“We are looking forward to welcoming the top robotics teams in the country to the national championship tournament this weekend,” said Bill Padnos, executive director of NTMA’s AMPED program and of the National Tooling & Machining Foundation. “These student teams and their industry advisors have worked all year on their bots and we know there will be some serious metal-crunching competition.”
To prepare for regional and national competition, student teams are paired with local industry professionals, bringing together creativity and technical know-how. Teams work all year to create the remote-controlled robots that face off in gladiator-style competition.
Thirty-four teams, representing the best in the country, will each bring combat bots of all different designs and shapes to the tournament this weekend. Through double-elimination rounds, each bot – and each team of students – will be put to the test. Students must repair damaged bots on-site.
“Manufacturing offers incredible career opportunities to do interesting and important work and be well compensated for it,” Padnos said. “Despite that, there are millions of open manufacturing jobs in this country right now. Programs like NTMA’s NRL competition provide a unique opportunity to introduce young people to the industry – and the real fun of experimenting and building things! – in a way that we hope will spark a passion and keep them engaged for the future.”
The competition will take place from 7-10 pm on Friday, May 20, and 9 am – 5 pm on Saturday, May 21.
