The origins of the National Robotics League program comes straight from the old BattleBots TV Show. The top US based teams on the current show feature competitors that got their start battling 15lb Bots in high school.
While NRL Bots do not breathe fire nor do they compete in arenas with saw bleeds coming up from the floor, the basic premise of Bot building is the same as the pros.

BattleBots Resurrection
In the BattleBots arena, armor is shredded, sparks fly, and the robots are torn to pieces. When the smoke clears, the teams are left with the carnage that remains. In each of these episode, the cameras follow their race to repair these mechanical gladiators in time for the next fight.
